Many people are still surprised when they first visit Turkey to discover it is a well established wine producer. Turkey, in fact, has a past steeped in producing brilliant wines across a number of regions within the country, with historians tracing wine production in Turkey as far back as several thousand years.
Today, Turkey owns the fifth-largest vineyard acreage in the world, and is globally ranked sixth for grape production. Within the winemaking industry, the Wine Institute ranks Turkey 45th in the world, just ahead of Belarus, India, Cuba.
In a recent years Turkish grapes have grown in popularity. These include Kalecik Karasi (meaning: black from the small castle), a medium bodied grape most similar to Pinot Noirs, and Papaskarasi (meaning: Priest’s Black), a very old Thracian grape renowned for producing, sharp, yet elegant, fruity wines. The best known Turkish white wine grape is Narince (meaning: delicately), which offers floral notes, and produces a medium to full bodied wine with a balanced good acidity, similar to Chardonnay.
